Magnificent Delhi and Its Treasures
Delhi, the Capital city of India is a unique blend of modernism and historical heritage value. The old centurion structures stand in competition to newly constructed skyscraper buildings and plush shopping arcades. Even as you ride in the swanky metro rail, the city emits an aura of the glorious past. Some of the major attractions in Delhi are:
- Shahjahan's Red Fort : Built by the Mughal Badshah in the middle of the 16 th century, Red Fort as the name suggests was constructed using red colored sandstones. The gigantic walls, famously called the Lal Qila are 33m above the ground level. The Fort was built to keep out the enemies. The Red Fort is historic for its contribution during India's struggle for freedom against brutal British rule. The Very First Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru gave his first speech from top of the Fort, when India celebrated its freedom at the memorable midnight of August 15 th in 1947. The emotional tradition continues its saga every year on the Independence Day of India.
- Victorious Qutub Minar : Sultanate Qutub-ud-Din constructed the superb attraction of Delhi, Qutub Minar in the late 11 th century. This 73 m high tower is a monument of victory and triumph. The tower is essentially made of five floors that taper with the rising height of the building. Each floor has a unique balcony, where you can have a panoramic view of the whole city. But due to some disturbances in the recent past, the admission to the tower for the public is banned.
- Holy Jama Masjid : It is a huge mosque, capable of admitting more than 20,000 devotees into its fold. Built in the year 1644 by the legendry Shahjahan, it is the largest mosque in Indian land. This picturesque mosque has 3 immense gates, 4 tower buildings and 2 minarets made out of pure white marble stones and red sandstones.
- Revered Raj Ghat : Situated near the banks of the serene Yamuna River, Raj Ghat is a wonderful memorial dedicated to the Honorable Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. A sort of Remembrance Day is conducted every Friday, the day when he was cruelly assassinated. There are 2 beautiful museums near Raj Ghat, which is devoted to the Father of our Land.
You can do lots of shopping in this beautiful city, the Connaught Place, State Emporium, Janpath shops and Chandni Chowk, all are excellent shopping places for Indian handicrafts, clothing, silk garments, leather items, brass items, fashion jewelry and handloom products. Delhi is world-renowned for its silk kurtis and embroidered dress materials. Delhi, although a mixture of different cultures and religious beliefs, the Punjabis and the Sikhs dominate the city to a considerable extent.
Delhi, being a city of extreme climatic conditions, the best season to tour Delhi is from the blooming month of February to April and from August month to November, rest all the months are either very hot or extremely cold. The hot seasons are very severe and many a foreigner may prefer to avoid the hot summer months.
Delhi, being the capital city of India has prime political importance. You may easily get a train ticket or a plane ticket if you want to visit the city from anywhere in the world. There is a national airport and an International airport, which links us to all the major cities of India and the world. Among the railway stations, the Old Delhi station, the New Delhi Station, Nizamuddin station and the Cantonment station, all are major railway heads connecting you to Delhi. So all are welcome to this splendid city, which is the pride of India.
