The Mighty Forts of Rajasthan
The princely State of Rajasthan is a land of great historic value. The Rajputs of olden times were a fearless lot, who did not shy out in face of adversities, but faced them bravely till their very end. The Rajput Empire was unconquerable with its colossal fortresses and ironclad palaces. Some of the Forts, which still stand the test of time, are:
- Jaipur's Jaigarh Fort : Jaigarh in the Indian local language means a Victory Fort. Jaigarh was built somewhere around the 15 th and the 18 th century. It is 15km from Jaipur city and surrounded by rocky landscape. The daunting stony fortifications can be visible from the township. The view from the ‘Dungar Darwaza' or the main gate is just mind-blowing. The fort is one gigantic structure balanced on a hilltop. It gives the most terrific view of the Pink city below.
- Udaipur's Chittorgarh Fort : It is an immense castle with a broad pathway of one kilometer to approach it. the grand road has seven gates, which leads to the primary gate ‘Rampol' or better known as the gate of lord Rama. According to mythological legend, the main foundation of the forbidding fort was laid by Mahabharat legendary character, the mighty Bheem, one of the five Pandavas. The fort is also treasury to secret and priceless artifacts that were taken away by Akbar to his Capital.
- Bikaner's Junagarh : This is the unconquerable castle, which has never come under enemy hands. Raja Rai Singh built it in the year 1593 AD. He was a reputed general in Akbar's army. The fort houses beautiful palaces like the Rang Mahal and Anup Mahal. There is also a royal temple for idol worship of various God and Goddesses and a museum, which is now open for public viewing.
- Ajmer's Taragarh Fort : The Fortress is gigantic and immense in structure. It was built to safeguard the entire city. Six gates lead the way inside. The fort houses the dargah of Miran Saheb, who was a top official of the state and was killed in a fierce battle. The fort gives a majestic view of the whole panorama of the Ajmer city. Taragarh fort is valued for its ancient and archaeological significance.
- Jaipur's Naharghar Fort : This fort is situated at a distance of 10 to 15 km from Jaipur city center. It is named after the hills that surround it-the Nahargarh Hills. The large fort is 600 feet above the sea level. Raja Jai Singh built the fort in 1734. It houses the Hawa mandir and Madhvendra Bhavan. The view is awesome from the top of the fort, spanning the whole city and the beautiful Man Sagar Lake.
The rich cultural value of Rajasthan is depicted in its grand architectural monuments. Rajasthan is truly a magical state of unique culture and royal lineage.
