Shimla-The Indian Heaven

The Devi Temple:
The original name for Shimla was Syamala Devi. The name Shimla is derived from the Hindu mythological Goddess ‘Syamala Devi', she represents the fiery Goddess Kali. A temple is dedicated to the Goddess in the dense jungles of Jakhu hills. It was built in the early start of the 19 th century. British rulers for their convenience changed the name of the city to Shimla, as it was their prime summer resort during the 16 th and 17 th century.

The city is steeped in rich regal heritage, the architectural glory of the grand Vice regal Lodge, the imposing iron lampposts and many restaurants and lodges of pre-independence era speak of the Anglo culture and diversity within the city walls. There are numerous buildings and shops with medieval period Anglo-Saxon names.
