The Guwahati Tour, populaly known as the Gateway to Northeastern India, one of the finest tourism destinations. History of Guwahati Assam:
Before knowing about how and when Guwahati came into being, let us know how the name was born. The word is a derivative of two words from Assam. It comes from the word Guwa which means areca nut and the other is haat which means market place. Initially it was pronounced as Gowhatty. When the British came they pronounced it as Gauhati. But after 1980's it was standardized and now it is called as Guwahati. Very interestingly, nobody knows the exact date of when the city came into being. With reference to the holy books of Puranas and other long established books of history it has forced us to believe that this city can be the most primeval cities present in Asia.
It has been found out by the historians that many reputed kingdoms had made the city of Guwahati their capital. To name some we have the legendary kings of Bhagadatta and Narakasur as per the books of Mahabharata, the place of worship for the famous Goddess kamakhya which stands proudly in Nilachal Hill being a very prized area for the Buddhist and tantrics, the remains of Basista which still help the historians for archeology and the only one of its kind temple of Navagraga in the hills of Chitrachal.
The city was also named as Pragjyotishpura this word means the radiance of the east and also Durjoya. It was the capital when the Pala and the Varman dynasties ruled India.
